Teeth darken over the years.

Tea, coffee, cigarettes and dark-coloured foods build up on the enamel surface; with age the enamel thins and the yellowish dentine beneath shows through more.

Whitening lightens the discolouration in the enamel and dentine with the help of a special gel. The tooth surface is not covered and its shape does not change — only the colour is lightened. That makes it one of the least invasive aesthetic procedures.

How is whitening done?

In the in-practice method, the gums are covered with a protective barrier, the gel is applied to the tooth surface and left for a set time. In the home method, treatment continues at home with custom-made trays, for the periods your dentist specifies. Which method suits you is decided according to your teeth and the degree of discolouration.

A Plan Made for You

Depending on the type of discolouration, we plan in-practice treatment, a home system, or a combination of both.

The Tooth Surface Is Preserved

Nothing is reduced or covered. The shape and texture of the tooth stay the same.

A Health Check First

Whitening is never carried out before decay, gum disease and wear have been assessed.

Whitening is not permanent. Your eating habits and smoking determine how long the result lasts.
Temporary sensitivity lasting a few days can occur after the procedure; it usually passes on its own.
High-concentration products sold over the counter can damage enamel and gums. That is why treatment should follow a dentist's assessment.

How does the teeth whitening process work?

The procedure is usually completed in a single session. The steps below show the general flow.

1
Examination and Shade Recording
Dental and gum health are assessed, and any decay or gum problem is treated first. Your current tooth shade is recorded and we discuss the expected result.
2
Preparation
Surface build-up is removed with scaling and polishing. This step lets the gel reach the enamel evenly.
3
Treatment
In the in-practice method the gums are protected and the gel applied. In the home method, custom trays are made for you and written instructions are provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does whitening damage teeth?
Carried out under a dentist's supervision, at the right concentration and for the right duration, it causes no lasting damage to enamel. What carries risk is the unsupervised use of high-concentration products sold over the counter.
How much lighter can I expect?
That depends on the type of discolouration and your current tooth shade. The result is not the same for everyone; a realistic range is given at your examination.
How long does the result last?
It depends on your eating habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking speed up discolouration. A top-up treatment may be needed over time.
Will my fillings and veneers whiten too?
No. Only natural tooth structure lightens. Fillings or veneers in visible areas may need replacing after whitening; we include that in the plan from the start.
Will there be sensitivity?
Temporary sensitivity lasting a few days can occur. It usually passes on its own; if it persists, you should come in for a check-up.
Can it be done during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Whitening is not recommended during these periods. It is better postponed until after birth and breastfeeding.
