Losing a tooth affects more than appearance.

The teeth on either side of the gap gradually tilt into it, the tooth in the opposing jaw over-erupts and chewing balance is lost. In the area where there is no tooth root, the jawbone also begins to dissolve over the years.

An implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone that takes the place of the lost tooth root. The crown fitted onto it closes the gap without reducing the neighbouring teeth, and restores chewing function.

Implant treatment, explained on TV8

On the programme Günaydın Doktor, broadcast on TV8, Dt. Eliz Engin Işık explained implant treatment: who it is suitable for, how the surgical procedure goes, and what to pay attention to during healing. You will find the answers to your questions in the video.

Neighbouring Teeth Are Preserved

A bridge requires reducing the healthy teeth on either side. With an implant, the neighbouring teeth are left untouched.

The Jawbone Is Supported

In an area without a tooth root, bone dissolves over time. By loading the bone, an implant slows this down.

Natural Chewing

Because it is fixed, it does not move about like a removable denture. You can chew hard foods.

Implant treatment can last for many years in patients with healthy gums who keep up regular care.
Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and certain medications can affect healing; you should share these with your dentist.
Implants do not decay, but the gum around them can become diseased. Regular check-ups are decisive for the longevity of the treatment.

How does implant treatment work?

The process depends on your bone structure and the number of implants to be placed. The steps below show the general flow.

1
Examination and Planning
An intraoral examination is carried out and a digital X-ray taken. Bone density and gum health are assessed to determine whether an implant is suitable.
2
The Surgical Procedure
The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. You receive your aftercare instructions in writing.
3
Healing and the Crown
It usually takes 2–4 months for the implant to fuse with the bone. At the end of this period an impression is taken and a custom-made crown is fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is implant treatment painful?
Because the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, no pain is felt during it. Mild swelling and sensitivity lasting a few days can follow; this is managed with the painkiller your dentist recommends.
How long does treatment take?
The surgical procedure for a single tooth usually takes 30–60 minutes. However, it takes 2–4 months for the implant to fuse with the bone, and the crown is fitted at the end of that period. The total time varies with your bone structure.
Can every patient have an implant?
No. The jawbone must have enough density and height, and the gums must be healthy. Uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications and heavy smoking can affect the process. Suitability is determined after an examination and X-ray.
How long does an implant last?
As long as gum health is maintained and regular check-ups are not missed, it can last for many years. An implant does not decay, but problems can arise if the surrounding tissues are neglected.
What should I pay attention to after an implant?
For the first few days you should avoid hard and hot foods, not smoke, and follow the oral care instructions your dentist gives you. Detailed instructions are provided in writing after the procedure.
