Not individual teeth, but the smile as a whole

Smile design is not the name of a single procedure but a method of planning. The length and width of the teeth and their proportion to one another; how much gum shows when you smile; how the midline aligns with the midline of your face — all of it is assessed together.

The planning determines which treatments will be applied. Sometimes that is only whitening and gum contouring; sometimes it is a broader process involving veneers or orthodontics. In other words, smile design describes not the result but the route to it.

See the result in advance

Planning is done digitally. The new form of your teeth is designed from intraoral photographs, impressions and, if needed, X-rays, and shown to you on screen. Where it can be applied, you can try the result in your own mouth with a temporary mock-up and tell us what you are not happy with before any permanent work begins.

Planned Around Your Facial Features

Tooth length, form and midline are determined together with your facial shape and the movement of your lips.

A Try-In Before Treatment

The design is shown digitally and, in suitable cases, tried temporarily in the mouth.

Only as Much Treatment as Needed

Not every design calls for veneers. If whitening, bonding or orthodontics is enough, no tooth structure is removed.

Smile design is not only about appearance; bite and chewing balance are part of the plan too.
Gum level affects the look of a smile as much as tooth length. Where needed, gum contouring is included in the design.
How long the result lasts depends on care. If you clench your teeth, a night guard is planned alongside the design.

How does the smile design process work?

The process depends on the scope of the plan. The steps below show the general flow.

1
Assessment and Planning
An intraoral examination is carried out, photographs and impressions are taken and, if needed, an X-ray. We talk through what bothers you and assess gum health and your bite.
2
Digital Design and Try-In
The new tooth form is designed digitally and shown on screen. In suitable cases you see the result in your own mouth with a temporary mock-up; this is the stage to tell us about any changes you want.
3
Treatment
The planned treatments are carried out in order. Depending on the scope, that may be whitening, bonding, gum contouring, veneers or orthodontics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my teeth have to be reduced for a smile design?
No. Reduction only comes into play where veneers are needed. Whitening, bonding, gum contouring and orthodontics require no reduction. Which method suits you is determined after the assessment.
Can I see the result beforehand?
The design is prepared digitally and shown to you. Where it can be applied, you can also try it in your own mouth with a temporary mock-up.
How long does it take?
It depends on the plan. A design involving only whitening and bonding can be completed in a few sessions; where orthodontics is needed, the process runs over months. You will learn the exact timeline once planning is complete.
Is it suitable for everyone?
If there is gum disease, decay or a significant bite problem, these must be treated first. Some procedures are postponed for patients who are still growing. Suitability is determined at the examination.
Will it look natural?
When tooth length, form and colour are determined according to your facial features, the result looks natural. That is why we never work from a ready-made template.
