The first experience shapes the years that follow

A child’s first encounter with the dentist is the beginning of an attitude that lasts a lifetime. If that first visit involves a painful complaint and a hurried procedure, the child associates the dentist with pain and resists going in the years that follow.

That is why our priority with young patients is building trust. At an introductory appointment, made while there is no complaint, the child gets to know the setting, the chair and the instruments without fear. When treatment really is needed, everything then goes far more smoothly.

Why do baby teeth matter?

When baby teeth are neglected on the grounds that “they will fall out anyway”, the permanent teeth developing beneath them are affected. A baby tooth lost early lets the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, leaving no room for the permanent tooth — which creates a need for orthodontic treatment later. Advanced decay in a baby tooth causes pain and infection, affecting the child’s eating and sleep.

An Introductory Appointment

No procedures at the first visit. The child gets to know the setting and the instruments without fear.

Preventive Treatments

Fissure sealants and fluoride applications take precautions before decay starts.

Early Orthodontic Monitoring

Jaw development is monitored; problems spotted early are solved with shorter treatments.

The recommended time for a first dental visit is the period following the eruption of the first tooth. There is no need to wait for a complaint.
The recommended age for a first orthodontic assessment is 7. At this age jaw development and the positioning of the permanent teeth become predictable.
Falling asleep with a bottle at night and frequent sugary snacks are the most common causes of fast-advancing decay in baby teeth.

How does your child’s appointment work?

The procedure is usually completed in a single session. The steps below show the general flow.

1
Getting Acquainted
At the first visit the child explores the setting, sits in the chair and sees the instruments. Nothing is forced; the mouth is examined when the child is ready.
2
Examination and Assessment
Dental and gum health, jaw development and any habits are assessed. An X-ray is taken if needed.
3
Plan and Explanation
We share our findings and recommendations with you. The home care routine is decided together.
4
Treatment and Follow-Up
Any necessary procedures are divided into sessions according to how the child copes. Check-ups are scheduled to monitor development.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I first bring my child in?
A check-up is recommended in the period following the eruption of the first tooth. Even without a complaint, this visit is valuable both for preventive measures and for helping the child get used to the dentist.
Baby teeth fall out anyway — do they need treating?
A baby tooth guides the permanent tooth beneath it. If it is lost early, the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap and there is no room left for the permanent tooth. Advanced decay also causes pain and infection.
My child is afraid of the dentist — what can I do?
Before the appointment, try not to use phrases such as "it won't hurt" or "don't be scared"; they put the idea of pain in the child's mind. We can plan the first appointment as an introduction with no procedures.
What is the right age for braces in children?
The recommended age for a first orthodontic assessment is 7. That does not necessarily mean treatment will start; the aim is to monitor development and see whether early intervention is needed.
What is a fissure sealant?
It is a protective coating applied to the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. By stopping food debris collecting in those grooves, it reduces the risk of decay.
Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
In most cases, yes. Some children are more anxious with a parent present, though, so we assess that together.
